Face and Jaw Surgery

Jaw aesthetics: The jaw gives the shape to the face and is a part which plays an important role in the formation of profile image of the person. When people look at the mirror and examine themselves, they generally focus on the size and shape of their nose, to their ears, eyes or skins. However, there is one more thing requiring concentration: Jaw structure. A regular jaw structure in suit with the face shape is one of the important points while designating the aesthetic beauty concept. A change made in the shape or size of the jaw may change particularly the profile view of the person and add beauty to him/her as much as a rhinoplasty operation. If jaw corrections are required to catch the aesthetics in face, I mostly recommend jaw implementations in addition to the nose operations. Implementations(Actions): Satisfying results may be obtained in jaw operations by, depending on the face shape of the person, sharpening the jaw, projecting the jaw or leaning the jaw backwards. Besides, the lipid tissue may be taken with Vaser Liposelection method and the jaw may be gifted a beautiful view. Now I will tell about some simple aesthetic actions we apply on jaws. In the orthognautic jaw surgery we work on the chin, also for the problems in the teeth structure coming from the birth, and reach to solutions. This sort of disorders may be related to bigness, smallness, frontal or backward positions as separately for upper and lower jaws; but also may be related to the deformations of both jaws. For instance, the upper jaw may be small and the lower jaw may be big; however it is misleading to determine about the type and size of any deformity just about the view of the face. Cefalometric analysis determines the proportions of the face and the decision shall be given afterwards about which operation to be applied to which bone. Then the surgical planning phase comes. Orthognautic jaw surgery will be told in my following articles. Today, I will write about the jaw aesthetic methods using simple actions.

Jaw happly lifting (Jaw attaching): This is a very successful and easy to apply method that I use frequently in the recent years for jaw end enlargement purposes. The zone is applied local anesthesia and a special cannule (without incision) is passed through the lower part of the jaw and a distinction towards the jaw end is provided in the soft tissue. In case of lateral projection is present in the end of jaw, the same method applied for narrowing. The persons who wish a small dimple on their chins also may favor this method. The action lasts 5-10 minutes. No resting period is required afterwards. No apparent swollen areas or purple spots occur. Taking the soft tissue to the frontal position give us some gains in the image. The face obtains an oval image, the hanging down signs at the sides of the chin decrease significantly, a sharper cavity is obtained under the chin and accordingly a younger view/image is provided.

Jaw implants: For the persons with small lower jaw bone and backward jaw end, implants are placed and the chin is extended with the correction of the face proportions. The jaw end implants being used in these operations are of polytetraflouroethylene, which is an accordant substance with the body and is being used for many years in medicine, or of silicon. This action may be performed via an incision made through the channel between the lip and teeth in the mouth or via a lateral incision made on the lower zone of the jaw. The operation may be performed under local or total anesthesia depending on the will of the patient and other, if any, operations to be concluded at the same time. This operation is generally performed together with rhinoplasty for to balance the face proportions.

Lower jaw bone angle zone ımplants: The jaw bone represent an angle about a couple cm down the ear lobe in frontal view. To proportionate the face and to have a more projecting jaw bone for the persons with less developed bones, an operation may be performed. The operation is made by performing an incision within the mouth. The cornered implants shall be used for this operation in various dimensions depending on the size of the jaw. Thus, the jaws with unclear corner lines are treated. This is particularly demanded by the men. The patient may return to the home just after the operation and the facial elastic bands are removed a couple of days later.

Lower jaw vaser liposelection: The vaser liposelection is an advanced method which I prefer instead of liposuction through the recent years. It is just melting the lipid, without harming the tissues, and taking the lipid tissue from a 2 cm incision under the jaw. This method’s most important advantage is that it makes no hang downs. Sometimes no intervention to the jaw area is required when the lipid tissue under the jaw is simply taken. This is because sometimes the sharp jaw structure is hidden under the excess lipid in this zone. Additionally, small incisions may be performed behind the ears and all the excess lipid tissue surrounding the jaw may be extracted. I use this for to obtain a general thinning of the face. A special bandage should be used 3-5 days after the operation. Through this period the swollen areas lessen importantly.

Orthognautic surgery: The orthognautic surgery is the correction of the deformity, originating from the deformation of the teeth lining and causing biting and chewing problems, via an operation on the chin.
